Language

The table below outlines what can be expected at different stages of children's language development. This is to be used as a guideline only, if you have any specific concerns or would like more information, please contact us.

 
  • WHAT TO EXPECT

    • Understands simple questions e.g. “Where’s your shoe?”

    • Responds to their own name

    • Starts to combine 2-3 words together

    • Answers simple questions with “yes” and “no”

    • Talks to themselves or their toys in play

  • WHAT TO EXPECT

    • Has an extensive vocabulary (900 words)

    • Can describe objects using adjectives e.g. “round”, “blue”

    • Begins to use conjunctions such as “but”, “and”

    • Asks “Who”, “What” and “Why” questions

    • Uses correct grammar most of the time in 4-5 word sentences

  • WHAT TO EXPECT

    • Uses 50-100 words

    • Uses pronouns e.g. “I”, “me”, “my”

    • Expresses and understands location words e.g. “on” and “under”

    • Uses basic grammar in 3-4 word sentences

    • Follows longer instructions and understands how objects are used

  • WHAT TO EXPECT

    • Has an extensive vocabulary (900 words)
